Derailed by Chain
5 out of 5 stars
Derailed by Chain
This Altus front derailleur replaces the original from 1993 that was no longer working. While the old derailleur was able to be removed without breaking the chain, the new derailleur has a rivett where the old one had a screw and therefore requires you to break the chain to install. Once installed everything works great.

I know the Altus isn't rated by Shimano as one of its higher-end derailleurs, but this was an easy and affordable upgrade to the stock cheap-o that came with my Schwinn and shifts easily, positively and is easy to adjust. It was slightly more challenging to install with the shims, but the advantage is it's a much more stable install-- very tight. I do wish I had searched a bit more and went with the lower-mount FD-M310, instead, as this one is just under one of my bottle holder mounts, but I never intended to use the downtube bottle holder, anyway, and it works and looks great, so I'm keeping it.

Like others have mentioned-- The cage is riveted, so you'll have to break your chain. Just my recommendation: If you're willing to break the chain, don't waste a whole lot of time trying to find a link to allow you to reuse it-- Just buy a new one (they are very affordable and typically come with a master link included) and a 2-way park tool to help you install and, if necessary, later remove the master link.

Working great on my 22-44 3x setup, A Tiny bit janky shifting to the middle from the lowest But I'm going to consider that My fault, and Its been consistently shifting for over 500 Miles, and always downshifts and I find that Much more important then shifting into a harder gear perfectly.

Shipping was quick and the product description was right on.. The derailleur was very sturdy and easy to set up for Shimano cranks and chainrings. It doesn't work all that well with other brands of cranks so trying to cross fit with other manufacturers or going beyond its stated 20 ring capacity could be problematic. It also mounts high on the seat tube and MAY interfere with a water bottle cages particularly on short mountain bikes. It worked well enough for me and I look forward to many years of use on my long haul touring bike. It's a very decent derailleur and is not cheap but is inexpensive.

I love the simplicity and robustness of this front mech. I had purchased a more recent model that didn’t have clearance for the rear tire and was considerably harder to set up. This was quick to install and works like a charm. Bonus that it matches the rear derailleur design.

The Altus M313 front derailleur was a great replacement for my sons Trek MT220, which use to have the SR Suntour XCM derailleur. The Altus worked well with the SR Suntour "Unified" XCM three sprocket crank set and 3/32" chain. This was installed along with Shimano EF51 shifters/brake levers to replace the original grip shifters. If you have spent any time trying to figure out which parts fix your kids bike, I hope this helps.

The media could not be loaded.
I have a vintage gt talera that I am trying to restore and it needed a front derailleur as the old one literally had a hole where the chain eventually just cut through the outer plate. Anyway the front triple is a 48-38-28 biopace crank which this derailleur should fit with its 20 tooth compatibility and max chainring size of 48 teeth. It shifts great from the smallest to the middle chainring, but then, everytime I go to shift into the 48 the chain gets jammed between the front derailleur inner plate and the largest ring. Like the chain just jams instead of jumping up to the largest gear. Not sure if this was an improper replacement but everything I'm seeing is showing this derailleur should work, and it looks great on the bike so I would love to use it. I would also like to note I tried adjusting the height and angle of the derailleur almost every direction and still jamming. Update - I went and bought a cheaper sunlite one for like 9 dollars on amazon and it worked great. It looked just like the old one that broke off. There has to be some unmeasured difference or specification with older and newer front derailleurs. Either way, the restoration is finished and the Talera is restored to its 90s glory, hell yea.

Works great. Unfortunately I didn’t realize some shifters and derailers were brand specific. I’m sure it doesn’t happen on all applications but if you’re trying to turn a chevette into a Cadillac, do some research before you start throwing parts on.
I’m saying don’t throw parts at the problem/s but you need to have an end game and understand what’s going on with the adjustment for the part(YouTube is your friend). I’m old BMX guy and i’m more on quality components than how much I paid for the frame.
